Photobooks I discovered this year – Part 2/3

It's the best-photobooks-of-the-year-lists time. I didn't bought many books this year, simply because there were really just very few which would blow my mind. So I decided to make a list of photobooks that I discovered this year on the one side, and on the other side to show some books from my collection which are totally underrated, in my opinion.

Contact Sheet #154: Deana Lawson

It's more a catalogue than a book, and it'm more about the works than the object. Deana's photos are direct, irritating and somehow disturbing in the same time.

Beautés D'archive

A beautiful, smooth little book published by Poursuite. It shows pictures of unknown women, found in one box in the archives of the French Society of photography. Get it here.

Susanne Klippel

I never heard of Susanne Klippel before, until I've received her book "Schwarz war ihr Haar". The photos in this book strongly reminded me of Anders Petersen's "Café Lehmitz"; they show similar characters in the same part of the city (Hamburg / St. Pauli), even around the same time – around the end of the seventies. While Anders Petersen focuses on the protagonists of Café Lehmitz, Susanne Klippel's portraits are about the women of St. Pauli and their surroundings and lives. And you can still get her books for very little money.

Helen Korpak: Pro Eto

I discoverd this book in a bookstore in Vienna. It's not her latest book, but I liked a lot the intimacy and tenderness shared in these images. Check her website here.
