Charalampos Kydonakis: Warn'd in Vain

"Warn'd In Vain" by Charalampos Kydonakis is a series taken in one of the most photographed cities in the world, which you will definitely recognise by familiar city views. However, the vibe and the feeling that these pictures radiate are somewhat otherworldly, unsettling and eerie. Particular circumstances and states, specific angles and approach to lightning turn what might have been regular NY street photography into something it is not. Charalampos Kydonakis uses flash in a way that illuminates subjects and details to the extent that they seem to be on the other level of perception or in other dimension. Very bright and present as much as illusive. Isn’t that guy in front of the National Debt Clock Doc Brown from “Back to Future”? Where the hell am I? Charalampos Kydonakis vision makes reality (or your knowledge or expectation of it) clash with the imaginary. And this is when you feel the ground slipping away from under your feet
and this is exactly when you love it.

Charalampos Kydonakis about "Warn'd in Vain":
'Warn'd in Vain' is an Argonautica inspired story made inside New York City's urbanscape between 2014-2017 that i spent 7 months on the other side of the ocean. It is a twin with a Minotaur parallel tale, titled 'Back to Nowhere' , shot in my homeland Crete between 2009-2017. Both works are subjective interpretations of each surrounding myth and do not intend to document. Each story works as a prelude to the other one and vice versa : "Warn'd in vain" is a stranger's questionmark inside the world's most photographed city, "Back to Nowhere" is a story about my island; the only place i 'll never find out how it looks in the eyes of a stranger.
